Patrick Hyland, m.
Bridget Quinn
The patriarch
of this branch of the Hyland clan, Patrick Hyland, was born in Kilmaine,
County Mayo, Ireland, May 9, 1801 (NOTE: Historical documents differ
as to the correct year of birth; some records show a birth year of 1804).
Patrick married the former Bridget Quinn (born May 4, 1811), also a Kilmaine
native. With the potato famine raging across the "auld soil," Patrick,
Bridget, and their children, Mary and Thomas, emigrated to America, living
for a time in Essex, NY before moving in 1848 to St. Paul, Minn., then
finally homesteading in Cedar Lake, Minn in 1856. Their second daughter,
Julia, became the first American-born member of the family, entering the
world in 1852.

To a New Life...
The land on which
the Hylands settled included a Sioux Native American passage from nearby
Shakopee. Soon after the family's arrival, members assisted one wounded
Sioux warrior, treating his injuries after a battle with the rival Chippewa.
Bridget Hyland
died Jan. 21, 1880 and Patrick died two months later, on March 25.
Both died in Cedar Lake and are buried in the town's St. Patrick's Cemetery.
What follows
is our effort to tell the world about the Patrick and Bridget Hyland family.
Information that pertains to events before the turn of this century is
heavily dependent upon historical research, county records and newspaper
articles. There are many "holes" to fill, but in time, we'll be able
to shed light where possible. Our objective is to gather together
for the first time the past and present entities of a family long stretched
across half the globe.
The family
tree is but the beginning of a long process. Access the links below
for information pertaining to Thomas, Mary and Julia Hyland. Note
some of the entries will be sketchy, but with the grace of God, some Irish
luck and a whole lot of research, hopefully the history covering all generations
can be uncovered.
